La Línea de la Concepción is a city in Andalusia. As the name suggests, the front line between the British was long here Gibraltar and Spain. The village, which had formed around the military camp of the 18th century, became an independent municipality in 1870. You can still see today in the approximately 250-meter-wide strip between Av. Principe de Asturias right on the border and Av. del Ejécito ("Army Street") Bunker systems from the time of the last complete cordoning off, which lasted from 1969 to 1985. During this time, industrial subsidies were given to compensate for the losses from cross-border trade. An oil port with storage tanks was built in the bay towards Algeciras. On the west side there was a fish factory, after which a small port La Atunara is named.

There is a compact old town around the church, town hall and market hall. The Urb. Residencial Guadiaro and Las Dunas 17 are on the Mediterranean side and are of no interest to tourists.

background

La Línea is primarily a transit station for trips to Gibraltar, there are hardly any tourist attractions. Many people working in Gibraltar have looked for apartments here because the rents are cheaper. Many of the Brits living on the Costa del Sol also come here to get some “real” food - whereby a Central European begs the question why one would prefer classic English food to Spanish cuisine. Gibraltar was never part of the EU VAT zone, so it is cheaper for Spaniards to buy certain goods on the rock. For most goods, however, it is much cheaper to get away in Spain, so that most of the rock-dwellers come across the border to shop.
