There are several fortifications in La Seyne-sur-Mer and the surrounding area, some of which can be visited.

  • Le Fort Napoléon. Le Fort Napoléon (formerly: Fort Caire) is a fortification that was completed by order of Napoléon Bonaparte in 1821. Napoleon was injured in a battle in this region in 1793. Except for the liberation of France in 1944, it was never used for warlike purposes. In 1973 the fortification was transferred to the city of La Seyne, which had urgently needed renovations carried out. Today there is a museum of modern art in the fort. There is also a festival for contemporary French theater and a jazz festival in the summer.
  • Le Fort Balaguier. Le Fort Balaguier was built from 1634 to defend the royal city of Toulon and played a role in the battles of the Republican Army against the Anglo-Spanish invaders. Today there is a museum in the fortification.
