Toulon is a city in the department Var in the region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur right on Mediterranean Sea.

background

Toulon is located on the bay of the same name, which is protected by the Saint-Mandier peninsula and thus forms the largest natural harbor in the Mediterranean. For this reason, Toulon, which came to France in 1487, was commissioned by Louis XI. expanded to a military port. Towards the end of the 16th century, the fortifications were reinforced by Vauban.

Before the Second World War, the navy and the associated workshops were the only notable employer in the city. Before the German Wehrmacht invaded Toulon in November 1942, the existing ships of the French Navy were sunk. Allied troops landed in Toulon as early as August 1944, making it one of the first liberated cities in France. Today the Mémorial du Faron on the 542 meter high local mountain Mont Faron commemorates it.
