The Landes is a department of South West of France In the region New Aquitaine.

Understand

The name of the department comes from The land, a vast expanse of swamps; where the shepherds grazed their sheep. The image of Épinal is the shepherd perched on his stilts (in Occitan "les tchanques": to pronounce the tianques).

The "artificial" Landes forest came into being at the end of the XIX^e century when Napoleon III crossing the moor, commissioned Brémontier to plant maritime pine and clean up the land. Today, the economic life of the Landes is essentially based on the exploitation of this resource. Papeteries de Gascogne is the epitome of economic success. Who does not know the pine paneling of the Landes? But also: charcoal, turpentine, agglomerates ...

In the western part, on its Atlantic coast are wild beaches and dunes. It is enough to see the many tourists in the summer, to understand that the second economic resource of the department is tourism.
