Before it was discovered by Portuguese sailors, Khoikhoi and San lived on the shores of the lagoon. Rock paintings have survived nearby. Likewise, the probably oldest footprints of a Homo sapiens were found a few years ago. The shores and islands of the lagoon are a bird's paradise for every ornithologist.

Various water sports are available on the lagoon. It should be noted that not all areas in the national park may be used. The entrance to the lagoon can be used by all types of boats. The more you get into the lagoon, the more restrictions there are. No boat traffic or water sports are allowed in the rear part.
