background
As Jan van Rieebeck in 1653 Cape Town founded, he probably had no idea that what was initially a small settlement would soon become the cultural center of an up-and-coming country. The white settlers made their way further and further inland, and today's Western Cape Province was their starting point. Due to the excellent agricultural conditions in the coastal regions and the hostile Karoo semi-desert in the hinterland, the province was for a long time the growth region of the coming South Africa.
language
A good half of the people (especially white and colored people) in the Western Cape speak Afrikaans as their first language, but they usually understand and speak English just as well. Xhosa is spoken by a growing number of black people, who often understand English. So if you have a basic command of English, you should hardly have any problems here and due to the many German-speaking residents (especially in the hotel industry) you will certainly be able to speak in your own mother tongue.
getting there
By plane
The Cape Town Airport is the first expected point of arrival for many travelers to South Africa and the Western Cape. There are direct flights from Frankfurt am Main and London Lufthansa and South African Airways, or good connections with both airlines via Johannesburg. The Namibian Air Namibia also offers flights between Frankfurt am Main and Cape Town, with a change in Windhoek. Another alternative is that George Airport, which is located in the eastern part of the province, very close to the Garden Route. This airport can be reached with a change in Cape Town or Johannesburg.
By car
There are three major motorways that lead into the Western Cape. The N1 leads from Harare in Zimbabwe via Pretoria, Johannesburg and Bloemfontein across South Africa and then meets with the in Cape Town N2. This has already come a long way from Johannesburg Eswatini past the east coast behind. It then follows the east coast all the way via Durban, Umtata and Port Elizabeth straight into the heart of the Garden Route and on to the mother city of Cape Town. That is where she meets N7 one that always meanders along the west coast when coming from Namibia. Two other national roads lead into the network already described in the east of the province. The N9 comes from Middelburg and the N12 from the northern regions around Kimberley.
