Pair is a city in the Cape Winelands in South Africa.

background

Paarl was founded in South Africa by European immigrants as early as 1700. When the first whites came to the region in 1657, a 728 m high granite rock shone in the sun like a pearl and therefore became Paarlberg called. This hill gave the city its name.

The area around Paarl is characterized by viticulture. Here has the big cooperative KWV their headquarters, there are numerous well-known wineries, to be mentioned among many others Fairview, Seidelberg, Nederburg and Backsberg. Viticulture has been a tradition here since the beginning of the 18th century. Many of the huge oaks also date from that time. The plan to make wine barrels from their wood did not succeed. Instead, they line the main street and provide shade.

Today, Paarl belongs to the parent community Drakenstein, this includes other communities such as Gouda cheese, Saron and Wellington.
