Larvik is the southernmost larger city in Vestfold, with about 25 000 inhabitants. Larvik city is the administrative center of Larvik municipality, which is home to some other larger villages, including Stavern and Helgeroa, some of which are just minutes away with bus.

It was the first public outdoor recreational area in Norway and has been managed as a park since 1884. The area is simply known as Bøkeskogen, literally "The Beech forest". The park is near the city centre, between the centre and the Farris lake. The forest sits on the Vestfold Ra, the larges terminal moraine in Scandinavia formed during the last phase of the ice age some 12,000 years ago.
