background

Las Terrenas and the entire Samana peninsula are still an insider tip in the Dominican Republic. The area differs significantly from the tourist strongholds around Puerto Plata. Despite a good hotel infrastructure, you can still find lonely and dreamy stretches of beach in Las Terrenas and the surrounding area. The long journey from the airports discourages many tourists, so vacationers who want to have some peace and quiet are in good hands in Las Terrenas.

getting there

By plane

The nearest airport is El Catey-SamanáEl Catey-Samaná in the Wikipedia encyclopediaEl Catey-Samaná in the Wikimedia Commons media directoryEl Catey-Samaná (Q1262548) in the Wikidata database(IATA: AZS)However, it is also possible to arrive via Santo Domingo Airport and from there to take the bus to the Samaná peninsula.

The airfield in El PortilloEl Portillo in the Wikipedia encyclopediaEl Portillo (Q2875827) in the Wikidata database(IATA: EPS), just a few kilometers from Las Terrenas, was closed in 2012.

By bus

A few buses per day connect Las Terrenas with Santo Domingo. These are now often large coaches, but sometimes the minibuses are also used. The buses leave from the center in Santo Domingo (on Calle Barahona near the Plaza Lama department store) and from a bus station east of the city. If you want to go directly to Las Terrenas from Santo Domingo Airport, you don't have to go into the city first.

In addition, minibuses drive to and from the airport at very frequent intervals (approx. Every 20 minutes) Sánchez, from there there are additional connections to Santo Domingo.

Finally, there are also minibuses that Las Terrenas come with El Limón connect. Some of these continue to follow Samaná, but at certain times you have to change trains in El Limón.

The buses from Santo Domingo no longer stop in the center of the town, but only at the small bus station on the southern edge of the town. From there you can continue with taxis or motoconchos. It makes sense to find out about the prices beforehand in order to pay a reasonable price.

The buses to El Limón and Samaná leave in the center, on Calle Duarte. The buses to Sánchez also drive a lap through Las Terrenas on arrival, so that you can get off in the center. However, you do not leave there, only at your own stop at the southern end of the village, just before the gas station.

In the street

From Santo Domingo you can reach Las Terrenas via the "Autopista de Samaná" (DR-7), the expressway DR-5, as well as the road R-133, which leads past Sánchez directly to Las Terrenas. All roads are well developed, and the most important places (including Las Terrenas) are signposted. Despite the name "Autopista", however, the DR-7 and DR-5 cannot be compared with European motorways, as there are for the most part no separate lanes for the different directions of travel and the roads lead directly through the towns. The autopistas are subject to a toll.

There are also roads to Sánchez and Samaná via El Limón. The country roads are paved and largely in good condition.

By boat

mobility

You can largely move around the village on foot. The hotels run along a line along the coast, the outermost ones are about 10 minutes' walk from the center.

In the event that you still don't want to run, you can fall back on the Motoconchos, who are looking for customers all over the place. All official motochonchos wear a vest with a number, offers from other drivers should not be accepted. There is no public transport system within the town.

Tourist Attractions

activities

Water sports, including diving, are offered.

nightlife

There is a good selection of bars and restaurants in Las Terrenas. Even if Las Terrenas is not a tourist stronghold, there is prostitution of all kinds here too. Caution is therefore always advised when dealing with local people.

accommodation

health

The public hospital of Las Terrenas is well below the European average, whoever has health insurance should rather fall back on private clinics.

Practical advice

As everywhere in the Dominican Republic, knowledge of Spanish is essential if you are outside the hotel, as communication with the population is otherwise almost impossible. Knowledge of English or even German outside of the tourist professions is not widespread. However, there is a larger group of French residents in Las Terrenas, so it is largely possible there to communicate in French, sometimes also in Italian.

trips

The waterfall of El Limón is about 10 kilometers from Las Terrenas.
