To run is a Swiss City in Laufental. The city is known for the ceramic goods manufacturer LAUFEN and Ricola, which operates its headquarters in Laufen. The city invites you to visit its old town and to go on a variety of hikes. The Laufental also offers various castle ruins and climbing areas.

Laufen has only been part of the canton since 1994Basel-Country, before that it belonged to the Congress of Vienna in 1815 Canton Bern. The coat of arms of Laufens - it is identical to that one Basel, but with reversed colors - shows the bond with the then Principality of Basel.

Running is on the railway line Basel - To run - Delémont - Biel / Bienne. The travel time from Basel is around 20 minutes; a 2nd class ticket without a Half-Fare travelcard costs around 10 francs. Laufen also has direct train connections from Olten, Delémont and Porrentruy.

Various things to see are in the vicinity of Laufen. Mention should be made of the Mariastein monastery, the monastery in Beinwil, the music machine museum in Seewen and the geological nature trail in Bärschwil. Liesberg offers a rich flora, and the clay pit "Andil" is a site of numerous fossils. The airfield in Dittingen has a restaurant, which is open on nice summer weekends.

The region has a number of castle ruins. Those above Pfeffingen, Zullwil and Büsserach are quite well preserved.

Laufen is ideal for numerous hikes, as it is the hub of the regional PostBus network. At the train station there is an overview map of the region and the starting point for many hiking trails.

  • Passwang and Hohe Winde (1204 m), south of Laufen
    • Suggestion: Take the Postbus in the direction of Erschwil either to the "Passwang" stop (approx. 40 minutes' drive, on the north side of the tunnel) or to the "Alpenblick" stop (restaurant on the south side of the tunnel), the journey to the "Alpenblick" is a bit more expensive . Hike to the top of the pass above the tunnel, then continue towards Hohe Winde. Descent to Erschwil. Total duration approx. 6 hours.
  • Chaltbrunnental at Grellingen, with numerous caves a place of important prehistoric finds
    • Suggestion 1: Train journey to Grellingen Walk south of the railway line, branch off into Chastelbachtal. Quite steep ascent to Himmelried-Steffen, then descent via Chaltbrunnental. At the "Chessiloch" either back to Grellingen or to Zwingen. About 3 hours.
    • Suggestion 2: Bus ride to Meltingen (Meltingerbrücke stop), walk north down the Chaltbrunnen valley. About 3 hours.
  • Hikes along the Birs, either to Delémont (approx. 5 hours away) or to Grellingen.
  • Mariastein Abbey (direct bus connections on Sundays and public holidays), possibly with a return hike via Passwang and Blauen to Laufen
  • Storm's head, with the remains of a Roman control room. Offers a good view of the Laufen valley basin.
    • Suggestion: Take a post bus to Bärschwil station. Follow the hiking trail to the Stürmenkopf, then descend to Laufen. Total duration about 3 hours.
  • Lingenberg ridge: Take the post bus to Büsserach, get off at the "Alte Mühle" stop. First hike to the castle ruins "Neu Thierstein", and then ascend westward along the ridge. Towards the end of the hike, descend towards Fehren or Meltingen. About 3.5 hours. Good shoes and a head for heights are required. There is a partial risk of falling.
