In the heart of the Pays du Cocagne in the Tarn, Lautrec (in occitan: Lautrèc) welcomes you in the authentic setting of one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France and one of the Remarkable Sites of Taste. Former viscount, this medieval city is the cradle of the Toulouse-Lautrec family of which the poster painter is the illustrious descendant. A rural area, the village also owes its fame to the labeled production of pink garlic from Lautrec, the celebration of which, on the first Friday in August, is an essential event in the Lautrécoise festivities calendar.
Understand
Geography
Lautrec is located in the southwest of France, in the heart of the Tarn region of Cocagne, between the Agout and Dadou valleys. Its geographical location makes it in a way the center of the department of Tarn.
Story
The site of Lautrec was first occupied by a Celtic tribe, then by the Romans who would have built a temple to Ceres Eleusis, goddess of fertility and harvests.
- 940 (foundation of the Vicomté de Lautrec): Bernard, an Albigensian viscount, shared his land between his two sons. He left the part to the north of Dadou in Aton with the title of viscount of Albigensian, and ceded the southern part, between the of Dadou and Agout, to his other son to whom he gave the title of Sicard 1st viscount of Lautrec.
- 1306: Bertrand III son of Sicard VII ceded the Vicomté de Lautrec to Philippe Le Bel, king of France.
- 1426: Lautrec was taken by the English. The Count of Foix brought his troops; the English withdrew for 7,000 gold crowns in 1427.
- 1565: The chapter of the canons of Saint Pierre de Burlats takes refuge in Lautrec during the Wars of Religion.
- 1568: The Vicomte de Paulin, under the orders of Turenne, besieged the city. Having put cannons on the butt, seeing that they could no longer defend themselves, they surrendered and donated 1,500 crowns. Despite this the soldiers in revenge killed the monks, burned the churches and 400 people.
- 1670: The Marquis d'Ambres, François de Gélas, became Vicomte de Lautrec and had all the rights of the city.
- 1789: End of the Vicomté de Lautrec.
- 1983: Lautrec has been classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France.
Lautrec today
Former region where Pastel was cultivated (from the 13th to XIVe century), Lautrec now lives on mixed farming with mainly the famous pink garlic from Lautrec [1] flagship of the local economy, which is grown in a production area of 1,000 hectares, bringing together around 400 producers, including around 160 Label Rouge producers, which makes it possible to produce depending on the year approximately 4000 tons of Rose Garlic each year, of which 400 800 tons of red label. Since 1996, Ail Rose de Lautrec has had the I.G.P (Protected Geographical Indication). In addition, it is the only garlic in France to benefit from the Label Rouge quality office sign. [2] (since 1996). For more information, do not hesitate to contact the Lautrec Pink Garlic Label Defense Union at 05 63 75 90 31 . Beside the production of garlic, the Lautrécois remains a high place of craftsmanship (woodwork, stone, metals ...). - Model of the village: This is a stone reproduction of the village of Lautrec in XIIIe century, produced by a lautrécois passionate about history. This piece also includes an exhibition on the painter Henri de Toulouse Lautrec, descendant of the Vicomtes des Lautrec.
- Bread oven: This old bakehouse belonged to the Benedictines who made their own bread (self-sufficient life).

Monuments
The medieval city of Lautrec has a rich heritage. Indeed, most of these monuments, true witnesses of the past, have crossed the ages and are now part of the history of Lautrec.
- Collegiate Church of Saint Rémy: Built in 1394, it is one of the oldest buildings in Lautrec. This collegiate church is listed as a Historic Monument and is surprising by its dimensions, its trompe l'oeil paintings and its superb high altar in Caunes-Minervois marble.
- The ramparts and the fortified gate of La Caussade: In 1338, Lautrec was one of the best protected towns in Languedoc, with a fortified wall of 1,200 meters tower, pierced by 8 doors (see the model of the village). The Porte de la Caussade is the only one we have left today.
- Windmill of La Salette: It was built in 1688 and operated until the beginning of the XIXe century. In 1990, the Town Hall and the tourist office decided to revive this witness to the past forgotten by the Lautrécois. It is nowadays one of the few windmills in Midi-Pyrénées to be in working order. Do not miss: the Fête des Moulins, the 3rd Sunday in June and Heritage Day, in mid-September for free guided tours and demonstration at the windmill.
- To see her: Located near the Porte de la Caussade, a Roman road leads to an old washhouse. Built near the source of Saint Rémy, it is located on the site where the buildings of the first inhabitants of Lautrec stood. Rehabilitated for the first time at the instigation of the MJC, this old washhouse belongs to the local heritage. To do: Walking tour around Lautrec (4 km), Crest hiking trail (8 km) and Walking Tour of the Two Castles (16 km). Do not hesitate to download information on these hikes .
Museums
- Archaeological museum: Located on the 1st floor of the Town Hall, the exhibition room presents several collections of various objects (ceramics, millstones, oil lamps) and carved stones (lapidary museum) from many archaeological sites in the municipalities of the canton of Lautrec. Free visit or guided tour from 10 people. For more information, do not hesitate to contact the tourist office at 05 63 75 31 40 or by mail to [email protected].
- Shoe maker workshop: This workshop, recreated identically, really existed until the 1960s. It belonged to the last active clog maker in the village of Lautrec, Mr. Bonhoure. The workshop contains the material for the manufacture of this wooden shoe which is said to have been invented by the Gauls. Free visit in season or guided tour from 10 people. For more information, do not hesitate to contact the tourist office at 05 63 75 31 40 or by mail to [email protected]. Do not miss: Crafts and Hoof Festival, 3rd week of July and Heritage Day in mid-September for free guided tours, demonstrations and exhibition of old tools and machines in the Atelier du Sabotier.
Others
- Place des Halles: Since the Middle Ages, it has occupied a privileged position in the heritage of Lautrécois and is at the center of many markets and festivities. Triangular in shape, it accommodates on two sides cutlery from the XVe century above which rise half-timbered and corbelled houses. It was restored in cobblestones in 2002. Do not miss: Traditional market every Friday morning.
- The Mallégou district: It is probably one of the oldest districts of Lautrec. The origin of the word derives either from a notary family name of Lautrec "Mauléon" in Latin "Maloleone", or from a popular etymology on a play on words "malo leone": "the bad lion". From there, a legend was born: a juggler would have put his head in the mouth of the beast who would have devoured him.
- Open-air theater: Formerly the site of houses, the open-air theater of La Caussade was built in 1990 to accommodate musical groups or theater troupes during the summer festivals. Do not miss: General festival of Lautrec, end of May and Festivaoût, in mid May, for concerts and outdoor film screenings.
- Underground silos: These old cavities were dug under houses to store reserves in anticipation of a major crisis. There are more than 160 in the village of Lautrec. Some are visible near the open-air theater and the Porte de la Caussade.
- Botanical trail: Plant species are arranged there according to orientation and humidity. One can see there "Mediterranean" trees on the northern slope like the country elm. At the end of the path, you will find the Calvaire de la Salette as well as a magnificent viewpoint over the southern half of the department, with the black mountain and the Pyrenees as a backdrop. An orientation table is also at your disposal.
