Lens is a city in the department Pas-de-Calais, it has about 31,000 inhabitants.

The city of Lens is located in Northern French coal mining area, which was intensely exploited in the 19th and 20th centuries, but then became completely insignificant. What remained are numerous spoil heaps and a number of mine buildings. In 2012 the remains of the coal mining industry were turned into UNESCO world cultural heritage explained.
