The village with 440 inhabitants Lidice (German Liditz) is about 20 km west of Prague. On June 9, 1942, German units led by the SS destroyed the village as an act of revenge for the murder of Reich Protector Reinhard Heydrich. All the male residents were shot, women and children were deported to concentration camps and the village was burned down. After the war, the ruins were left as a memorial and Lidice was rebuilt a few meters away.
