background
Livno is located on the eastern edge of the Livno Plain (Livanjsko Polje). The city, first mentioned in 892, is the capital of Canton 10 of the (Bosnian-Croatian) Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It borders in the west Croatia.
The city was occupied by the Ottomans in 1463 and remained Ottoman until 1878, when it was placed under Austro-Hungarian administration (it was ceded in 1908). In 1918 Livno came to the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (from 1929 Kingdom of Yugoslavia), in 1941 to the fascist state of Croatia. In 1945 the city became part of the Yugoslav republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which declared itself independent in 1992. The city, which is predominantly inhabited by Bosnian Croats, was only slightly affected by the effects of the Bosnian War. In 1995 it came to the Federation on the basis of the Dayton Agreement and became the capital of Canton 10.
