Loja is a city ofEcuador, located in the region of Sierra.
To know
Off the beaten track or at least the more traditional tourist itineraries, Loja is one of the reference locations for those wishing to visit the Podocarpus National Park.
Loja itself is a "neat" provincial town with a colonial-era atmosphere and a handful of attractions. The welcome sign on the entrance road bears the words "Loja, musical capital ofEcuador"for the fact that the city has given birth to successful singers.

Bombuscaro forest at Podocarpus park
- 3 Podocarpus National Park - Park on the eastern side of the Andes, covered with rainforests. It covers an area of 1462.80 km2. About 85% of the park is located in the province of Zamora Chinchipe, while the rest belongs to the province of Loja.
- The two main entrances of Cananuma and Bombuscaro are 25 and 90 minutes away from Loja respectively. There are three guided tours that last from 15 minutes to 1 hour and 20 minutes. Longer trails are available for those wishing to camp. Admission costs $ 10 for foreigners. Other entrances to the park are in the vicinity of the village of Vilcabamba and Zamora.
- SOUTH
Vilcabamba
- 4 Vilcabamba (41 km) - Picturesque village in a remote valley, known for the longevity of its inhabitants. It offers opportunities for excursions, including on horseback, to the Podocarpus National Park and modest accommodation choices. Vilcabamba derives from the word Huilcobamba or Huilco Pamba which in Quecha means sacred valley.
Itineraries
- 5 Macará - Those who wish to continue their journey in Peru they could use the Macará border crossing but it is much less frequented than that of Aguas Verdes, both because the formalities are very slow, and because the itinerary is more tiring and less interesting.
- Before arriving in Macará you can visit the 7 Jardín botánico Reinaldo Espinosa. while once you have crossed the border you will have to stop in the city of Piura, definitely uninteresting.
