background

Long Swamp is located on a large, semicircular bay with various names. In the south it is that Fat Hog's Bay, in the North East End Bay. In the south, the bay is joined by the small, offshore island Buck Island protected. This makes it a popular anchorage for yachts. There are also a number of marinas and repair shops for sailing yachts.

In the middle of the bay, where Fat Hogs Bay merges into East End Bay, two streets branch off to the north and west. The northbound Lambert Road ends on the north coast at Long Bay. The westward Ridge Road runs over the top of the hills to Sage Mountain National Park. After a few hundred meters, however, there is a junction to the north that leads to Josiah's Bay.

The island Buck Island is privately owned. A previous owner had started building a bridge between the island and Tortola. Under British Virgin Island law, this would have meant that the public could use this bridge and enter Buck Island. The bridge construction was canceled. There was also a runway there, which has now grown over.

To the south of Buck Island there is another, deeply cut, safe, semicircular bay. On the west side it is the one Maya Cove, on the east side of the Hodges Creek. It is approx. 200 m wide and 600 m long. There are also marinas and service companies here.

1 km southeast of Maya Cove is the Paraquita Bay. This is a large, protected lagoon, a marine reserve. During the cyclone season, however, up to 120 yachts can find shelter there. The passage for sailboats is very narrow, especially for catamarans or trimarans it can get narrow.

Above Paraquita Bay is both the Department of Agriculture with its experimental farms and the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College. It is affiliated with the University of the West Indies and is attended by over 800 students. Music events take place there regularly.

Another 1 km further southeast of Paraquita Bay, halfway between East End and Road Town is the horseshoe-shaped one Brandywine Baywhich is only separated from Road Town Bay by a single headland.
