Other goals

Sailboats at Soper's Hole
  • Frenchman's Cay the island in the far west is connected to Tortola by a short bridge. Between the two islands is "Soper's Hole" and a small marina with a large number of sailing boats of all kinds.
  • Nanny Cay also written Nannie Cay, the island is connected to Tortola by a very short bridge

background

The name Tortola is Spanish and means "turtle dove". The main island of the "British Virgin Islands" is 18 km long and 2 to 5.8 km wide. The length of the island is a 350 m high ridge without valleys, so that the island crossing from south to north always leads over the ridge. The highest elevation is that Mount Sage with 543 meters.

getting there

  • 1 The international airport is located on Beef Island, east of Tortola. Both islands have been connected by a bridge for a number of years. The airfield has been expanded, but is still so small that only regional traffic is possible. The nearest international airport is located at San Juan on the island Puerto Rico.
  • 2 The port of Road Town is regularly called by cruise ships. From there there are regular ferry connections to the other British Virgin Islands and also to the American Virgin Islands Saint John and Saint Thomas.

mobility

There are a few minibuses and taxis operating on the island, and there are a large number of rental cars.

Tourist Attractions

Cane Garden Bay. Bathing bay
  • 1 National park: Sage Mountain National Park. This 37 hectare jungle around the 585 m high Mount Sage was the first to be declared a national park. There are the remains of the original rainforest. A reforestation project has also been taking place for 20 years. There are well-marked paths and descriptions of the plants and trees. With the financial support of the Rotary Club, several observation stations were built from which one can see over the Francis Drake Channel and as far as Joost Van Dyke Island. At the highest point is an excursion restaurant with a viewing terrace. The paths to get there are relatively narrow and sometimes very steep.
  • 2 Mount Healthy Sugar Plantation, Brewer's Bay. On this plantation you can visit the thick walls of the former windmill from the 18th century. It is the only surviving mill on the island. The 0.36 acre site is under the care of the National Park Trust.

activities

The island is a paradise for sailors and divers, but you can also surf and hike, or just lie in the sun and laze around.
