Road Town is a city in Tortola.
background
Road Bay is a deeply carved, horseshoe-shaped bay. In 1969, construction began on the two Wickham’s Cays at their innermost ends. This created large areas for urban expansion, but mainly for port facilities and marinas. In the meantime the Tortola Pier Park built. Opened in December 2015, the spacious building complex offers space for numerous shops, most of which want to sell their goods to cruise tourists. There is also free WiFi.
The narrow Main Street runs through the city center and is the main shopping street in the island's capital.
The southwest corner of Road Harbor Bay is marked by Bird Point. The Fort Burt Hotel and the marina are located there in a protected location. A stone's throw away behind Point Burt is the Road Reef and Prospect Reef Resort.
On the other side in the east of the bay is Baugher’s Bay in the protected zone. This is followed by Fish Bay and on the further way towards the East End you pass Brandywine Bay on the Blackburn Highway.

Tourist Attractions

- Fort Charlotte. Fort Charlotte is located on the 280 m high Harrigan's Hill. It was named after Charlotte von Mecklenburg-Strelitz. This fortification was built in 1794. At that time it was the largest fort on the island. It is across from Fort George on the western side of the harbor on Harrigan's Hill. Today you can only find a few remains of the wall, the well and underground stores there.
- Fort Burt, on the southwest outskirts of Road Town. Fort Burt was probably built on a hill by the Dutch in the 17th century. In 1776 the English made some changes. At the time it was given its current name after William Burt, the governor of the Leeward Islands. Today only a few vaults are left. Parts of the Fort Burt Hotel have been built on them.
- Fort George, Port Purcell. It was built in 1794 by the royal engineers on the east side of the harbor on Fort Hill, 50 m high. It is named after King George III of England. Today the ruins of the fort are on private property and are not open to the public.
- 1 Government House. Built in 1899, destroyed by a hurricane in 1924. Today's building in classic colonial architecture was built on the same site in 1925/26. Until 1999 it was the residence of governors and administrators. Because of its dilapidation it should be demolished. Public protests prevented this. A new building for the governor was built on the neighboring property to the west, the old house was renovated and can now be visited as a museum. There you can see finds about the island's history, colonial furniture and autographed books by the Queen of England.Open: Mon - Fri 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.
- Virgin Island Historical Society Folk Museum, Main Street - Sir Olva George’s Plaza. The museum is housed in a typical, small West Indian house and shows finds from the time of the indigenous people to the time of the plantations. You can also see some finds from the sunk ship "Rhone".Open: Mon - Fri 8.30 a.m. - 4.30 p.m.
- 2 J. R. O'Neal Botanic Garden, Botanic Road. Tel.: 494-4557. Botanical Garden. The botanical garden is centrally located on the Huntum Ghut river, is only 1.8 hectares and was declared a national park in 1987. It was created in 1902, at that time it had a size of 24 hectares. Due to the development of the town of Road Town, its boundaries became increasingly narrow. In 1970 the agricultural research station was moved to Paraquita Bay. The remaining 2 ha area was initially unused. Through the personal efforts of Margaret Barwick, the wife of the former governor, and J. R. O'Neal, the first chairman of the National Park Trust, today's garden was created and opened in 1986. It is worth seeing and nicely laid out. There is a waterfall, lily pond, tropical bird house, mini rainforest and lots of tropical plants.Open: daily 8.30 a.m. - 4 p.m.
