Lorri is a region ofNorthern Armenia.

Understand

Lori is located north ofArmenia, where the towering Caucasus mountain ranges intersect with the maze of rivers running through forests. This region is very popular with campers and hikers. The climate is temperate and relatively humid thanks to the Lori-Pambak mountains which protect this area from the cold air from the north. Vanadzor, a town built largely from colorful tufa stone, is the administrative center of the Lori region. It was once home to a small community and then grew as its industries and seaside resorts grew. With a museum of man and history, a children's art gallery and many other cultural centers, Vanadzor proudly honors the people of Lori by celebrating their art and culture. The Pambak, Dzoraget, Aghstev and Debed rivers, as well as their tributaries and streams, have made this area very attractive for fishing enthusiasts. However, visitors are not only won over by the natural beauties of Lori; equally impressive are its architectural wonders such as the monasteries of Sanahin, Haghpat and Kober, as well as Odzun Cathedral. The village of Sanahin located on the right bank of the Debed river, near the town of Alaverdi, is connected to the main roads by a bridge dating from the 12th century. This is the oldest building in the history of bridge engineering to have survived to the present day. The monastery of Sanahin, one of the two sites in the region to have been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is worthy of its fame. A masterpiece of architecture, the Sanahin Library was the largest building in medieval Armenia. The oldest building in the monastic complex is the Church of Saint Astvatsatsin built in 951. Over the centuries the monastery has expanded to include the Church of Amenaprkich, the Chapel of Saint Grigor dating from the 10th century and the 'Grigor the Master Construction Academy. Among the UNESCO World Heritage sites is also the Haghbat monastic complex, located just 5 km from Sanahin. Achot III of the Bagratuni Dynasty founded the monastery in 976. Haghpat was once a very important cultural center housing a gigantic collection of literary works. These manuscripts, which over the centuries have survived numerous looting and invasions, have been transferred to the Madentaran Museum in Yerevan. South of Alaverdi is the famous Odzoun Cathedral built almost 1,500 years ago in stone. of white and red felsite. This is a magnificent example of Armenian architecture. The Alaverdi National Art Gallery, a small town nestled in the Debed Valley, has works by Hakob Hakobyan, Panos Terlemezyan, Grigor Khanjyan and many more.
