Loulé

Loulé is a district town in Portugal, it lies in the Algarve. The largest communities (Frequesias) in a circle (Concelho) are Quarteira, Almancil and São Clemente (Loulé) as well São Sebastião (Loulé). The coast of Loulé is part of the Rock Algarve, known as (Barlavento).

The area around Loulé was already settled in the Stone Age. Carthaginians, Phoenicians and Romans lived here. After that, the Moors ruled the Iberian Peninsula. In 1249 the city was recaptured and in 1266 it was granted city rights. The 1755 earthquake caused severe damage to the entire region.

The development of the last decades has been determined by tourism. The localities that emerged on the drawing board like Vilamoura and Quarteira are popular tourist destinations of a fairly international audience.

The nearest airport is in the neighboring city Faro.

The 1 Loulé train station just outside of town on the route of the Linha do Algarve, it connects Lagos (Portugal) above Faro With Vila Real de Santo Antonio on the Spanish border.
