The province of Luxembourg was created when the Grand Duchy was divided Luxembourg in 1839, when the western, predominantly French-speaking part was added to the newly formed Kingdom of Belgium.

The official language is French. In the area around Arlon (Arel), a Luxembourg dialect is sometimes still spoken. In Beho (German Bochholz) German is also spoken.
