Tourist attractions are mainly focused on Gallo-Roman remains, castles and religious buildings.
Understand
Dating from the Gallo-Roman era and located at the crossroads of two Roman roads, Arlon is one of the oldest towns in Belgium, with Tongeren and Tournai. It grew around a hill called Knippchen which gave it a strategic importance in history. Its activity today is centered on commerce, education and administration. It is located in the south-east of Belgium and borders the Luxembourg to the East.
To speak
Although historically the great majority of the population of the region (called Pays d'Arlon) spoke a Luxembourgish patois, nowadays this patois is only known by the old generations, the francization having done its work. Many young people get by in English and also prefer to learn German at school, the Grand Duchy and theGermany being closer geographically and culturally than the Dutch-speaking regions.
