Luxembourg, commonly called from Stadium ("The City" in Luxembourgish), is the capital of Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

Understand

Before being the capital of the Grand Duchy, Luxembourg was the seat of the county then the Duchy of Luxembourg since the Xe century when Count Sigefroy of Luxembourg had a castle built there on the remains of a castellum Roman located on the Bock rock.

The city occupies an exceptional site classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With its fortifications, it is located at the top of a sandstone rock with steep edges, bypassed by two rivers, the Alzette and the Pétrusse. The old town is separated from the new to the south by the deep gash in the Pétrusse ravine crossed by bridges, such as the famous Adolphe Bridge (1899-1903). To the north, it is linked to the Kirchberg plateau by the Grande-Duchesse Charlotte bridge (1964) which spans the Alzette. Three of the 24 districts occupy the valleys: Grund, Clausen and Pfaffenthal.

See

  • The grand ducal palace
  • Religious buildings: Notre-Dame de Luxembourg Cathedral, Saint-Alphonse Church, the former Neumünster abbey (it houses the Neumünster Abbey Cultural Meeting Center).
  • Military buildings: the casemates overlooking the Alzette and Pétrusse valleys
  • Places: Place Guillaume II and Place d´Armes. Place d'Armes is the “living room” of Luxembourgers. They like to sit there on café terraces on Sunday afternoons to listen to brass bands from all over the country performing under the bandstand; but, very home-like, they rarely linger there in the evening.
  • Structures: the Adolphe bridge, built by Paul Séjourné and the Pulvermuhle4 viaduct, which spans the Pétrusse.
  • Company offices: the offices of Spuerkeess and Arbed (current Arcelor-Mittal company)
  • The Château de Septfontaines, reception house of the Villeroy & Boch manufacture dating from 1782
  • The Bock rock. This rocky outcrop formerly linked to the city by a drawbridge (now the castle bridge) has been somewhat flattened by the creation of the Clausen climb. It supports the ruins of the Luxembourg castle, built in the Xe century, demolished in 1555 and transformed into a fort in the 17th centurye century. Destroyed in 1684, during the siege of the city by the French, it was rebuilt by Vauban. In 1745, the Austrians undertook the development of the fortifications and dug casemates. The Bock was razed in 1875: all that remains on the surface is the tower called “Dent Creuse”.

The luxembourgish cuisine is influenced by the cuisine of neighboring countries. However, quite a few restaurants offer authentic Luxembourgish dishes.

Restaurants such as EMS Gare district or Mousel Cantine Montée de Clausen, however, allow you to taste this one.

Have a drink / Go out

Despite the apparent calm, there is a nightlife scene in Luxembourg.

A few hundred meters from the station, a few atmospheric bars grouped around an interior courtyard: 42-44 rue de Hollerich.

Rue de la Loge:

  • Prime Time, a house bar-club;
  • ënnert de steiler, bar;
  • Am Puff, bar-club, located in an old wine cellar.

In the Grund:

  • scott's pub, at 4 Bisserwee;
  • the black stuff at 15 val de Hamm.

The banks of Clausen are also worth a visit, as are many bars in the town center.

In terms of nightclubs, White, Magnum, By-Pass and M club are the most popular.

For the more courageous, a trip to Boos K'fé in Bridel!

Housing

As in all metropolises, accommodation is expensive in Luxembourg and its suburbs. Many Luxembourgers cross the border to settle in the regions ofArlon, Messancy and Athus in order to find more attractive prices.

Cheap

The youth hostel located in the Grund offers accommodation for very affordable prices (around 20  the night). Located a short walk from the city, the hostel is nestled in the heart of the Grund Valley in a pleasant natural setting. The rooms are very clean, the decor is modern and quite "lounge". The hostel has free internet access, a pool table, a laundry service and a relaxation area with sofas and cable television. A catering service, fast or classic, is also offered and the value for money remains correct.
