The Luxembourg province is a province in the south of Belgium located in Wallonia and whose capital is Arlon.
Understand
The province is the southernmost, the most extensive and the least populated in Belgium. It borders on the France in the south-west (departments of Ardennes, of the Meuse and of Meurthe-et-Moselle) and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg to the East.
Its territory was part of the Duchy of Luxembourg until the French Revolution, then of the Department of Forests until 1814, then of the Kingdom of Netherlands until the Belgian Revolution of 1830, and finally of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg until 1839 when it joined Belgium as a province.
Regions
The Ardennes massif, comprising the northern two thirds of the province, is dominated by landscapes of forests and livestock. The highest point in altitude 652 meters of the province is located at Baraque de Fraiture in the town of Vielsalm.
The extreme south of the province, called Belgian Lorraine, is made up of, roughly speaking, from Gaume to the west and from the country ofArlon to the east, two cultural sub-regions whose division does not correspond exactly to that of Belgian Lorraine nor to that of the current communes, the most notable exception being the commune of Martelange which is part of the country of Arlon but is located in the Ardennes. Geologically, Belgian Lorraine has the particularity of having a succession of three west-east oriented cuestas whose front is to the north.
