Lyss is a Swiss Municipality in the canton Bern.

background

Lyss was first mentioned in writing in a deed of gift in 1009. At that time it belonged to the County of Aarberg and, when it was conquered in 1377, came to Bern. Until the first correction of the Jura waters between 1868 and 1878, the municipality had to struggle with severe flooding. The development of today's town depends very much on the opening of the two railway lines together. The railway line from Bern via Lyss to Biel / Bienne was first opened in 1864. In 1876 the one from Lausanne via Lyss to Solothurn. When the road from Biel to Bern was rebuilt in 1887 and the fastest route now led via Lyss instead of Aarberg, this triggered an economic upswing, which resulted in Aarberg becoming less important.

There are a total of 160 clubs in Lyss. So the opportunity to be active is great.

Lyss has a very active community life: Thanks to the promotion of renewable energies, Lyss has been awarded the label "Energy City" and is therefore one of the leading 60 Swiss cities.

Lyss has its own local TV, LOLY (Local TV Lyss and Surroundings) and the free newspaper "Lysser und Aarberger Woche" appears every week.

In the summer (June) the Lyssbach market, which is famous in the area, also takes place. A kind of fair with many stalls, culinary delights, music (including performances by bands such as Gölä), entertainment for children and a LunaPark.

In winter Lyss celebrates the Lyss Carnival (in February), during which there are children's and normal parades and everyone has something to celebrate.

Lyss just celebrated its 1,000th anniversary in 2009. During 3 weekends in August 2009 Lyss celebrated its anniversary exuberantly.

Lyss has a large and beautiful park swimming pool. Nice because it is located directly on the Aare and is very green. It has a pool with a 1m and 3m tower, a swimming pool, a pool to which a wide slide is connected, and an area for the little ones. The park swimming pool also has 2 beach volleyball fields and a large playground.

The Seelandhalle Lyss is used in various ways: On the one hand for Lysspo, a trade fair that takes place every 2 years, and on the other hand for ice hockey games and free "Schlöflen". Every now and then other events take place, such as the sale of military equipment or the Pub Fest.

The Kolibri leisure center is located very close to the Seelandhalle. It offers the possibility to play tennis, squash, bowling, etc.

The community library in Lyss offers books, CDs, DVDs, etc. on 2 floors.

kitchen

Lyss has something for everyone: from the kebab stall across from the Swisscom shop at the roundabout to the tried and tested classics such as the "Weisses Kreuz". There is also the bear, the deer, etc.

The Glatz bakery offers all kinds of fresh baked goods and delicious sweet temptations and the Reichen café has the right drink to go with it.

nightlife

The Kulturfabrik (KUFA) Lyss has been back since September 2010. A concert venue where there are parties or concerts every weekend from September to the end of May. The restaurant has two locations: the club (200 people capacity) and the hall (700 people capacity).

The "Castello" nightclub, which is located directly opposite the train station, is particularly well-known.

But there are also numerous bars such as the Alex Bar, the Kreisel Bar, the Hospitium Lounge, the Boléro or La Torre, which tempt you to have a drink or two.

Lyss also has its own cinema, which always shows the latest movies, in the original sound in the evenings and in German during the day. The cinema is relatively small - it has a cinema room - but very familiar and cozy.

If you want more, you can quickly reach the 2 larger cities: It is 9 minutes by direct train to Biel, and 18 minutes to Bern. From there, the so-called "Moonliners" also drive back to Lyss at night and cost 7.- from Biel and 15.- from Bern.
