Aarberg is a Swiss City in the canton Bern. Its medieval old town and the wooden bridge make the city a destination for excursions.

The city was founded around the year 1220. In 1351 Count Peter, who had no direct descendants, sold the city to the city of Bern.

Since the first correction of the Jura waters and the construction of the Hagneck Canal, which diverts the Aare into Lake Biel, only a residual amount of water has flowed through the old river bed between Aarberg and Büren an der Aar, which is known as the Alte Aare.

The city is known throughout Switzerland because one of the two Swiss sugar factories is located here.

getting there

Main road number 22 leads through Aarberg Solothurn above Lyss to Kerzers. The A6 motorway is at the exit Lyss south to leave, and on the main road it is around 4 kilometers to the center of Aarberg.

At the Aarberg station The regional trains stop from Büren an der Aare via Lyss, where the trains from Biel and Bern exists, go to Aarberg. These continue to Kerzers, where there is a connection to the trains to Murten and Neuchâtel consists.

Tourist Attractions

The medieval cityscape has been preserved. The basic rectangular shape goes back to the establishment in 1220 by Count Ulrich III. back from Neuchâtel.

  • The reformed town church was built in the late Gothic style in 1848. The tower dates from 1529. There are six Renaissance-style stained glass in the church.
  • The castle was built as the seat of the governor towards the end of the 17th century. The building is characterized by post-Gothic forms, the window layout was standardized in the 18th century. Inside is the coat of arms gallery of all bailiffs (over 80).
  • The wooden bridge has existed since 1557. It is located at the western exit of the town.
