Måløy is a city in the south of the island Vågsøy at the West Coast Norway.

background

Monument in memory of the Operation Archery 1941

The small town of Måløy is the main town on the island and the administrative seat of the municipality of Vågsøy. The city and region have their economic focus on fishing and fish processing.

Måløy was developed into a base of the Atlantic Wall during the German occupation of Norway, and became a target of Allied air strikes during the Operation Archery on December 27, 1941. The southern part of the city was almost completely destroyed in the attacks by British bombers, and was rebuilt in a more pragmatic manner in the post-war years. Thus, the city itself offers little worth seeing, but a stay is worthwhile due to the surrounding nature on the coast and natural sights like that Jug stones.
