Cozia Monastery is a monastic settlement located in Vâlcea county, Romania.
About
Founded by Voievod Mircea cel Bătrân, lord of Wallachia between 1386-1394 and 1397-1418, Cozia monastery dates from the 14th century. The monastic complex comprises a whole set of heritage buildings; thus: the church "Holy Trinity" built in 1388, to which is added the porch in 1705; the chapel of the Assumption (1583); the chapel "All Saints' Sunday" (1710); the hospital „St. Apostoli ”(1542-1543) founded by Radu Paisie, son of Radu the Great lord of Wallachia between 1495-1508; former hospital (14th century); the refectory built in 1853 and the body of buildings of the enclosure on the north, east and south sides.
The church „St. Trinity"
The place of prayer (cross-shaped) built of stone blocks alternating with rows of bricks, is the work of craftsmen from Serbia. The church has an open porch supported by four stone columns in front and two in the back. Above the nave rises a decagon-shaped tower. Both the cross on the tower and the narthex painting are from the time of Mircea the Old. The church still keeps the polycandres donated by Constantin Brâncoveanu. The interior fresco, made between 1390-1391, is still preserved only in the narthex. Painting from the nave and the Holy Altar dates from 1707 and is attributed to Preda Zugravul and his sons: Ianache Sima and Mihail. In the time of Neagoe Basarab, the fountain was built under the porch of the cells, known today as "Neagoe's Fountain".
Location
Cozia Monastery is located in the Călimănești resort in Vâlcea County, on the right bank of the Olt. It can be reached from the municipality of Râmnicu Vâlcea (22.9 km) following the national road DN7 / E81 on the route: Bujoreni - Lunca - Gura Văii - Călimănești - Căciulata.
