Lupșa Monastery is a monastic settlement from Alba county, Transylvania, Romania.

Historic

Lupșa Monastery is one of the oldest monastic settlements in the Arieș Valley, founded with a spiritual role for the nearby villages, by monks who were hermits in the Land of the Moţilor.

In the middle of the 18th century the monastery was pastored by the abbot Procopius and had only a few monks, a monastic life that lasted until 1820, when, due to anti-Orthodox pressure, the monastery was abolished and the monks were expelled by the Habsburg authorities and re-established. the request of the faithful, only in 1992.

Inside the monastery there is a wooden church (historical monument) dedicated to the "Holy Great Hierarch Nicolae", founded in the fifteenth century by Master Stanislav, a well-known boyar from the family of Prince Cândea de Lupșa. The church was built of oak, in the shape of a nave, initially only with an altar and a nave. At the end of the 17th century, the vaults were replaced by straight ceilings (they received a decoration similar to the coffered ceilings of the Reformed churches), and in 1810, the narthex and the bell tower were added to the church.
