Sihăstria Monastery is a monastic settlement in Neamț County, Moldova, Romania.

About

The monastery was founded for the first time in 1655, by the hermit Athanasius, together with seven of his disciples. In 1734, Bishop Gideon of the Roman built a new stone church, in the classical Moldavian style, on the site of the old one.

Old Church

The "Birth of the Mother of God" church was built in a triconch plan, with a single tower that rises above the nave. The interior is divided into four rooms: porch, narthex, nave and altar. Initially, the church did not have a porch, this being most probably added in 1837, when other construction works were made at the monastery. From the porch you enter the narthex through a massive oak door. The narthex is interrupted by a suspended transverse arch. The nave is separated from the narthex only by a protruding arch. The apse of the altar has two lateral niches that take the place of proscomidiar and diaconicon. The tower, cylindrical in shape, is supported by curved overlapping arches that rest on four pendants. Following the fire of 1941, the old painting degrades, the church being painted in its entirety between 1986-1988 by the church painter protosinghel Vartolomeu Florea. Sihăstria Monastery is on the list of historical monuments in Neamț County.
