Mae Nam is a place on the island Ko Samui in Thailand. In the bay of Mae Nam you will find the best beaches of Samui if you are looking for peace and relaxation.

The pronunciation corresponds roughly to "Mannequin", even if some taxi drivers pronounce it extra wrong (Ma-e Nam), and means "river".

getting there

  • The Airport by Bangkok Airways is about 5 kilometers from Ban Maenam as the crow flies. The same applies to transport options as to Lamai. The taxi ride to the airport takes about half an hour.
  • There are enough taxis (around 400 baht), scooter taxis (around 100 baht / person), open large taxis (pick-ups, around 150-250 baht / person) available at the ferry in Nathon. As in the whole of Samui, the prices are also highly negotiable here.

mobility

Due to the size of this village, everything can be easily reached on foot. However, it is recommended that you rent a scooter for your travel stay. However, you should only rent a scooter if you are already practiced, as the roads on Koh Samui are often very bad and therefore a certain experience does not hurt. The capital Nathon and Chaweng can be reached within 15 minutes with a large taxi. Since Maenam is right on the ring road, it won't be a problem to flag up a taxi etc. at any time of the day. However, you have to expect excessive prices for taxis or songthaews at a later hour.

From the Lomprayah pier at the west end of the beach there are daily catamaran ferries to the northern neighboring island of Ko Phangan. Travel time: approx. 30 minutes. Price: 1000 baht for a return trip. First ferry there: 8:00, last ferry back: 16:20 (September 2017).

Tourist Attractions

It is always worthwhile to sit on the bench in front of a supermarket and watch the island go by on the Ringstrasse. There are also 2 temples in Ban Mae Nam. But the beautiful, quiet beach is very enjoyable.

A nice way to do something with small children is the sheepfarm in Maenam. Nice operators, good coffee, small rabbits and sheep that can be fed with vegetables and bottles. Small children can play.

In the village there are 2 supermarkets of the 7-Eleven chain and 2 fresh markets. There are also some "mom and pop shops" as well as textile and souvenir shops. There is a petrol station at each entrance and exit.

kitchen

Meals are served here in many roast and cook shops along the main street. Of course, a restaurant is also integrated in each of the many resorts and facilities. There are good pizzas in the "Fire Stone". Next to the supermarket 7-Eleven near the harbor you will find a very recommendable Thai fondue, which you have to try! The "Cocorico" is also recommended. This is a beach restaurant with a barbecue, where you can eat at bamboo tables right by the sea.

nightlife

There are a couple of massage parlors and bars on the main street, but they don't stay open too long, plus there are many beach bars where you can enjoy the idyllic sunset over Koh Phangan. The nightlife is not worth mentioning here.
