General
Maggiore is the westernmost of the three main lakes in Italy and at the same time the second largest. It is bordered by beaches Piedmont in the west, Lombardy in the east and SwitzerlandTicino canton in the north. The lake is located 55 kilometers northwest of Milan, is 65 kilometers long and has a coastline of 170 kilometers. Its deepest point in the Bay of Borromeo is 372 meters deep. The landscapes range from the rugged alpine landscapes of the north to the Mediterranean landscapes of the south.
Maggiore is a popular holiday destination. In the 17th century, the famous Milanese Borromeo family built magnificent villas for Isola Madre and Isola Bella. The nobility of Lombardy followed in the 18th century by building their own splendid villas between Stresa and Arona. The shores of Lake Maggiore have inspired several musicians and writers, including the Englishman Charles Dickens and Lord Byron, the Frenchman Gustave Flaubert, and the Italian conductor Toscanini.
