Castle
- 1 Castle of the Teutonic Order (Marienburg), ☎ 48 55 6470978, @[email protected]. It was built by order of Siegfried von Feuchtwangen from the Teutonic Order as an Ordensburg, which was given the name of Marienburg (literally "castle of Mary", the patroness of the order). It is located on the southeastern bank of the Nogat River and therefore accessible to merchant ships and barges. It was initially a convent, then transformed into a full-fledged castle. Malbork Castle consists of three parts: the high castle, ie the former convent; the middle castle, with the servants' houses and some services; the low castle, in which there was the karwan, a shop of arms of all kinds. During the Thirteen Years War many rooms of the castle were filled with various weapons to be used against a possible invasion. However, the castle regained its original functions with the Polish domination. It is a classic example of a medieval fortress; it is the largest brick castle in the world (in general it is the largest brick building ever built by man) and one of the most impressive in Europe. The castle and its museum are part of the World Heritage Sites ofUNESCO since December 1997.
The Castle Museum was inaugurated in 1961. Ancient armor can be found in the castle collection, many of which were inherited in 1896 by a famous Prussian collector, Theodore von Blell. According to studies, some of these date back to the Roman era, others to the Celtic era and still others from East Asia, up to the more recent ones of the 19th century. Another part of the collection is made up of coins, around 10,000. The archaeological collection is mostly composed of finds dating back to the time of the Teutonic Order. Interesting elements of this decoration are finely decorated tiles from the Imperial City of Beijing and some bricks from the Great Wall of China.
