Manta is Ecuador's city and port on the coast of the Pacific ocean.
To know
Despite being an industrial port, Manta is also a seaside resort thanks to a couple of large beaches a short distance from the center. Its main prerogative in the field of tourism, however, is the lively nightlife to which the military from the nearby US base contributed to its development.
Manta boasts a respectable tourist flow but almost all of them come from other parts of theEcuador. Few international tourists, almost all of US nationality. The city is located on the Ruta del Sol, a road that connects the various seaside resorts that overlook the coast of Ecuador.
Another important resource is tuna fishing.
Geographical notes
Located in a bay on the Pacific Ocean, Manta is one of the most important international ports in Ecuador.
Background
In the pre-Columbian era the city was called Jocay, and it was a meeting point for trade between the Mantensi and the Incas.
The conqueror Pedro Pizarro described Jocay as a "very big city", the temple was reached via a large road, at the sides of which stood 2.5 meters high statutes, which represented the chiefs and priests and which were destroyed by the Spaniards themselves. Manta was the cradle of the Manteña culture from 500 to 1526 AD. The man of this tribe was characterized by an aquiline nose, which pierced itself, as well as ears, to put on various rings and pendants, he was dedicated to agriculture, fishing and hunting. The women were dedicated to the cultivation of corn, potatoes, yuca, peanuts and other local products, as well as to the processing of pottery. These natives were polytheists.
In February 1534 the expedition led by Pedro de Alvarado arrived at the port of Manta, who burned and plundered the village, and took the chieftain and some Indians hostage because he had not found the treasure he thought existed in those places. Presumably Manta was founded by Francisco Pacheco (captain) in 1534, and in 1563 the president of the Real Audiencia de Quito officially named it San Pablo de Manta.
In 1735 the port of Manta was chosen by Charles Marie de La Condamine, a French mathematician and geographer who dealt with geodesy, as the arrival point in Ecuador for his mission concerning the calculation of the length of a meridian near the equator. Arrived in Manta then continued on to Quito.
