background

The name of this two-part place goes back to the Spaniards. The Ebranche River separates Upper manzanilla of Lower Manzanilla, which is located directly on the 18 km long Manzanilla Bay. There is a continuous coconut palm plantation along the whole bay. The first settlers were soldiers of the disbanded 3rd West Indian Regiment in 1822. Governor Woodford gave them and their families 6.4 acres each.

The road from Sangre Grande to Manzanilla is regularly flooded and therefore in poor condition.

beaches

  • Manzanilla Bay. The four kilometer long, white sandy beach is lined with coconut trees. There are toilets and parking and picnic areas, the Calypso Inn Restaurant, plus torturous mosquitos and sand fleas. Lots of locals come there on weekends. Bathing is not without danger, however, as there can be strong undersea currents. Lifeguards can only be found on a few marked beach areas.
