Marathon (in modern Greek Μαραθώνας) was an important city of Ancient Greece, today a city ofAttica in Greece.

To know

The town is located a couple of kilometers from the east coast of Attica, the seaside villages are interesting seaside resorts and the beach of Schinias with the pine forest is particularly beautiful.

The name etymologically refers to fennel, a very common plant in the plain of Maratona.

In ancient times it formed a tetrapolis with Probalinth, Enoe and Tricorinth, north of the plain that extends on the east coast of Attica.

Background

It is famous for the victory achieved by the Athenians over the Persian army of Darius I (490 BC), despite being outnumbered.

According to tradition, after the victory the Philippide emerodrome was instructed to go to the city of Athens to communicate the happy news: he traveled the distance from the plain of Marathon to Athens (about 35 kilometers) and managed to bring the news, dying shortly after for the enormous effort. This legend is reported by Plutarch and Luciano, who call the emerodrome respectively Eucle / Tersippo and Filippide; no trace of this legend is found in Herodotus.
