Mashhad is the second largest city of the Iran and is located in the northeast of the country. The eighth Imam (Ali ar-Rida, in Persian Imam Reza) of the Shiites is buried in Mashhad. His grave, around which the city of Mashhad developed, is now the destination of millions of pilgrims every year, and thus the most important Shiite pilgrimage site in Iran. Line 1 opened in 2011, line 2 in 2017. You can change at Shariati station (ایستگاه مترو شریعتی). Operating hours are from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. During the day there is a 10-minute cycle.
