Sahelian Mauritania is a region of the Mauritania.
To know
This semi-arid region extends south of the Saharan Mauritania up to the valley of the Senegal river to the border with Senegal is Mali. Before the drought of the 1960s, 70s and 80s, the relatively lush Senegal River valley stretched 16 to 30 kilometers north of the river. By the late 1980s, desertification had reached the northern bank of the river in parts of the valley. Almost the entire economically active population of the valley is employed in sedentary agriculture or fishing along the Senegal River and its main tributaries (i.e. Karakoro, Gorgol and Garfa). This area supplies most of the country's agricultural production.
When to go
Wintering (hivernage) starts earlier here than in Saharan Mauritania and often lasts from June to October. As farmers and shepherds depend on annual rains, a one month delay at the start of the rainy season can cause large losses and lead to mass migrations in Mali. Although extreme temperatures are tighter in the Saharan region, the daily temperature range can vary from 16 to 21 ° C. L'harmattan it is the dry and dusty wind that blows in the northeast and west, from the Sahara to the Gulf of Guinea. The rains in the Senegal River Valley area are greater than in other regions and usually occur between May and September.
