Mayaro is a village in Trinidad.

background

The place name comes from the Indian language and means "maya plant", so Maya plant. A plant that is no longer known today. In 1690, Capuchin monks from Spanish Catalonia came to Trinidad to convert the natives to Christianity. On the spot where the Catholic Church of Mayaro stands today, they built their very first church.

The French cultivated the land in this area and created the first plantations. When the island came into English possession, there were 65 cotton plantations there. By the end of the 19th century, most of the plantation owners had converted their lands to coconut palms, which were the largest of them Beau Sejour, Beaumont, Lagon Doux, Palmiste, Plaisance Estate, Radix Estate, Sainte Marguerite, St. Anns and St. Joseph Estate. They were all along the coast. The residents had only one regular connection to the capital, a steamboat that anchored off the coast once a week. It was not until 1914 that the railway connection from Chaguanas via Tabaquite to Rio Claro was completed. Over the decades, the plantations developed into small villages. Pierreville and Plaisance grew together to one place, Mayaro.

The population grew from 403 in 1797 to around 4,000 in 1946. In the last 60 years, Mayaro has developed into the largest village on the island, with around 15,000 inhabitants in 2007. The reason for this development are the oil and gas deposits in the sea Punta del Galeota. One or the other hotel on the long sandy beach has now been completely taken over by the oil companies for their employees. For the further development of the southeast of the island is the San Fernando-Mayaro Highway planned.

beaches

  • Mayaro Bay. Mayaro Bay has the longest beach on the island. You should only bathe when the yellow flags are up. If the lifeguards only raised red flags, you should not swim because of the dangerous currents! Beach guards should be on duty from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. At the end of the bay on Galeto Point there is a huge oil refinery.

getting there

In the street

On the Eastern Main Road you drive from Port of Spain to Manzanilla. There you can reach the east coast of the island. The Manzanilla-Mayaro Road leads from Manzanilla to the south, to Mayaro behind the Point Radix it is 24 km. The road always runs close to the sea. From Mayaro it is another 12.5 km south to the southeast tip of the island: Galeota Point. From there there are no further road connections in a north-westerly direction: blocked by the oil industry.
