Characteristic

Masuria is considered one of the wonders of nature because it has almost the richest water network among all regions of Poland. It is hard not to admire this place since there are many more lakes here than in other regions of our country. The biggest of them are Sniardwy lake (113.8 km²) i Mamry (104.5 km²). The Land of the Great Masurian Lakes attracts a lot of tourists who like to go to the lakes for various purposes. You can meet sailors and canoeists here, as well as lovers of silence and walks in the forest. The area is overgrown Piska forest, covered with a network of hiking, biking and horse-riding routes. In the area, you can visit a lot of Gothic castles and churches, built by the Teutonic Knights who once ruled this land.

Forests cover about 30% of the region's area. There are numerous complexes, mainly spruce and pine forests, in a condition similar to the original one. The largest of them are: Piska Forest, Borecka Forest, Purdzkie Forest, Ramudzkie Forest, Napiwodzkie Forest, Taborskie Forest and Dzierzgońskie Forest. Apart from forests, a large area of ​​land is occupied by mud and peat bog vegetation. There are also many species of herbaceous plants and relict tundra species, such as: water moss, Canadian marsh, plantain, calamus, meadow cornflower, hawthorn, clover and sea buckthorn.

Masuria is inhabited by many species of animals. The forests are home to bison, elk, beaver, deer, roe deer, wild boar and hare. There are also foxes, wolves, lynxes, pine martens, badgers and bats. However, this land is characterized primarily by the abundance of birds. These include: capercaillies, hazel grouses, black grouse, ravens, golden eagles, nutcrackers, jays, woodpeckers, buzzards, hawks, sparrow hawks, herons, cranes and many others. In the Masurian waters of rivers and lakes there are also many species of fish, including: salmon, sea trout, bullhead, chub, dace, whitefish, catfish, pike, roach, bream, perch, eel, peluga, white carp, silver carp and silver carp. lionfish.

Climate

The climate of Masuria is shaped mainly by the masses of continental air flowing in from the east. The winters here are long and frosty, while the summers are short and sunny. The growing season is also short and lasts approximately 180–190 days a year.

Historic viaducts in Stańczyki
