  • Soulce-Cernay  – Starting on the D437c along the Doubs, in the direction of Vaufrey, the first village encountered is Soulce-Cernay on the banks of the river. Its name is due to the salt source whose water flowed over bundles, which made it possible to collect a brackish and salty liquid, very useful in remote times for the preservation of food and to give it flavor. In addition to an ideal fishing route, especially for "fly fish", the hiking trails (GR5) will take you along the cliffs to the sea. Cave of the Rocks, former refuge for the inhabitants of the places and fortification of the lords of the time. This gigantic natural excavation as well as the old grain mill are worth the walk. At the Pont Neuf crossing, turn left onto Maîche, after a small climb of a few kilometers.) – the Hermitage castle (1633), very pretty building about forty meters long. The monks who originally occupied it made a liqueur called "de l'hermitage". The painter Joseph Aubert who stayed there left some paintings there. • Goumois (From the same crossroads, the left direction by the D437B, will take you back down on 14 km at the level of the Doubs to the city of Goumois and the border with Switzerland, by the road of the corniche and its magnificent panoramas on the valley and on the “Rocher du singe”.) – Goumois, the Franco-Swiss pearl of the Doubs valley, by the Treaty of Vienna of 1815, is divided into two municipalities between the France and the Swiss, with two mayors (180 French inhabitants and 120 Swiss), but linked by the bridge that spans the Doubs and family ties between the inhabitants of the two countries. • Charmauvillers (Leaving Goumois, at the exit of the village, turn right onto the D437A) – the corniche road offers grandiose panoramas over Switzerland and the Chasseral range (1 600 m). This small village is an obligatory stopover for hikers who, via the GR5, can eat at the Vanney stopover gîte then descend to the banks of the Doubs, passing in front of a beautiful little chapel erected in 1694 which adorns the site of the village disappeared from Etoz reach. The Ladders of Death

  • Charquemont  – You will not be able to leave the Maîche plateau without taking a tour of the Ladders of Death. Take the direction of Charquemont, cradle of French watchmaking. A very old village which has undergone XIe to XVIIe century all the miseries due to invasions, massacres, rampages and bubonic plague. In 1700, the town saw the first watchmakers-laborers. It is also a high place for skiing and hiking (GR5) through a very dense coniferous forest, rich in flora and fauna.
  • Biaufond  – Going down on Biaufond (Swiss border), at the French customs, a small road on the left leads to the parking lot of hydroelectric plant and a quarter of an hour's walk to reach the bottom of the ladders. Where halfway, after Fournet Blancheroche, a path leads you to the top of Ladders of Death. These ladders, originally made of wood, were used by shepherds to mount their animals on the plateau but, above all, allowed smugglers to easily pass from France to Switzerland (and vice versa) in order to escape the "gabelous" (customs officers). ) because contraband (salt, tobacco, spices, hunting powder, etc.) was juicy in these two countries. Today these ladders are metallic and allow you to descend quickly on the banks of the Doubs. For those with vertigo, a slightly longer path will bring you to the same point.
