Official site

Morteau, capital of the canton, commune of Doubs in Franche-Comte is at a crossroads on the D437 coming from Montbeliard (80 km) and going to Pontarlier (30 km) and the D461 of Besancon (67 km) Going to La Chaux-de-Fonds (13 km) in Swiss.

Understand

The town of Morteau is not only the watchmaking capital of Haut Doubs but also and above all for gourmets, the capital of Morteau sausage, Franche-Comté label.

To go

A railway line connects Pontarlier or Switzerland; very useful for the transport of the many frontier workers who travel daily to Le Locle or La Chaux de Fonds.

To Switzerland

  • By taking the D461 towards La Chaux de Fonds, after 6 km you arrive at Villers-le-Lac, another watchmaking city on the banks of the river. But the major tourist attraction of this city is the site of Doubs jump, which is accessible by boat shuttles that will take you along the meanders of the Doubs (14 km round trip) overlooked by high cliffs. The high fall of 27 meters contrasts with the limpid course of the river (out of flood season), but don't worry, the speedboat disembarks you before the fall.

Towards Besançon

  • Still on the D461 in the direction of Besançon, after about ten km you arrive at the Circus of Consolation To Consolation-Maisonette.

The circus arranged for hiking allows you to go from the monastery, from XIVe century, until a savage retreat of 350 meters deep where the Dessoubre and the Lance take their source. The path runs alongside the pretty waterfall, 47 meters away, of Lançot, you will admire the caves and the panorama offered by the belvedere of the Rock of the PriestThe monastery also has a Museum containing a collection of birds and butterflies. A very pretty chapel of the XVIIe century is worth a look.

Towards Pontarlier

The road all in bends (vircoillots in Montbéliardais), D437, runs along the Doubs and its high cliffs to the site of Remonot caves already described in the section of Pontarlier.
