background

history

Even if el-Maʿadi is a fairly recent city foundation, the area has been inhabited since prehistoric times.[1]

In connection with the construction of the railway line between Cairo and Helwan This city was built in 1904 and was originally intended to be laid out along this line. The planning was carried out since 1905 by the Canadian officer Captain Alexander J. Adams. The result was a western town with wide streets and numerous villas with gardens. Unfortunately, the modern city is now burying numerous archaeological evidence.

From 1940 to 1946 troops from New Zealand were stationed in el-Maadi (Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force).

In recent years, several high-rise buildings have been built, especially near the Corniche, and el-Maadi has been expanded to include two more districts, New Maadi and Degla expanded.

Portal of the house of Suleiman Pasha
Detail of the portal

This is a specialty Entrance portal of the house of Suleiman Pasha el-Faransawi (1788-1860), which is today in the schoolyard of the Lycée el-Horreya de Maadi (Arabic:مدرسة ليسية الحرية بالمعادي‎, Madrasa Līsīya al-Hurrīya bi-l-Maʿādī, 3 29 ° 57 ′ 12 ″ N.31 ° 16 ′ 3 ″ E), Road 87. Suleiman Pasha, originally named Joseph Anthelme Sève and converted to Islam, was a French officer in the service of the Egyptian viceroy Muḥammad ʿAlī and responsible for modernizing the Egyptian army. His house on the Corniche in the area of the Nile Island er-Rōḍa was a meeting place for intellectuals and high society in the middle of the 19th century. It was demolished as part of the construction work on the Corniche, and the portal was donated to the local French grammar school around 1950. The design of the portal is unique because it is a mixture of otherwise not so interwoven Muslim architectural details. Unfortunately, part of the undecorated lower part of the portal is missing. If you talk to the headmistress, the schoolmaster will certainly be able to open the iron gate. The easiest way to get to the school is via the underground station Sakanat el-Maadi (Arabic:ثكنات المعادي‎).
