Meaux (pronounced [mo]) is a city of Île-de-France.
To know
Background
The inhabitants of Meaux are called Meldois. Both the names Meaux and Meldois originate from Meldi, the Latin name of the original Gallic tribe that occupied this area of the Marne river valley.
How to orient yourself
The historic buildings and monuments of Meaux are mainly found in the old city, within the ancient defensive walls, still partially preserved today thanks to an important segment of the original surrounding walls from the Gallo-Roman era.
Neighborhoods
A meander of the Marne river divides the old town into north quarter (called among the Meldois as the district of the cathedral) and the south district (known among locals as the market district).
In north quarter there is the Cathedral of Meaux, the episcopal palace and its gardens (which outline the shape of a bishop's miter), the old seat of the chapter (le vieux chapitre), part of the defensive walls, some turrets and towers, and the archaeological remains of the sanctuary of La Bauve, which embraces the entire Gallic period (IV, III and I century BC), the era of the first Roman Empire, and the early Christian era and the following centuries.
The south district of the old city mainly includes the historic covered market and the Canal Cornillon, built during the Middle Ages, in the year 1235. Centuries later, in 1806, during the Napoleonic era, the Canal de l'Ourcq was built, intended for inland navigation when the Marne River is not navigable due to temporary sandbanks.

Where to eat
Meaux is today mainly known for Brie de Meaux (a variety of Brie cheese) and the local mustard variety. Following the official French administrative AOC there are two Brie de Meaux designations: Brie de Meaux fermier ("Brie de Meaux farm", made from the milk of the cows of a single single producer) e Brie de Meaux laitier (laitier, which comes from the French lait "milk", which here designates an accord, a mixture of milk from different producers).
Recipe Moutarde de Meaux ("Meaux Mustard") has been a commercially owned label of the Pommery company since the 18th century and today is derived not only in its well known traditional form but also in a variety of new combinations of different ingredients: Honey Mustard, Green Pepper Mustard , Moutarde Royale (the latter including Cognac in its composition).
