In the street

A location cannot be positioned more conveniently in terms of road traffic. Two motorways (A61 and A565) with one exit each flow around the town and meet at the motorway junction Symbol: KNMeckenheim. The two motorways in the village are not visible and usually not audible either. High noise barriers and incisions, lined with strips of forest, provide excellent protection.

Meckenheim actually has no sights, Meckenheim is a sight - but maybe only for architects and urban planners.

The city is a testament to how modern living was imagined in the 1970s: Lower thoroughfares are bridged by an independent pedestrian and cycle path system - ideal for local schoolchildren, but difficult for non-residents. As a pedestrian you cannot orientate yourself on the streets, there are often no sidewalks. The new Meckenheim was created because the ministerial bureaucracy in the young federal capital Bonn needed good-middle-class living space that should also be affordable for young families. So they drew an ellipse around two old town centers near Bonn, Meckenheim and Merl, and filled them with terraced and detached houses. These gently surround the few compact apartment buildings. Architecturally very interesting areas were created in the process. The whole thing was lushly greened and garnished with many playgrounds. A new center was created between the two old town centers, with a school center, cultural center, an indoor swimming pool, many sports facilities and, above all, a modern shopping center with a parking garage in the middle. The style certainly does not correspond to today's fashion, but it is representative of the taste and zeitgeist of the time.

A historically grown village center with old buildings can be found in the Ersdorf district (half-timbered houses; Catholic parish church of St. James the Elder with a wooden Pietà from around 1600; seven stone stations of the cross; stone grave crosses from the 17th / 18th centuries in the cemetery) .
