Meknes is a city in northernMorocco and capital of the Meknes-Tafilalet region.

background

The entire old town of Meknes was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996. The city's location on a fertile plain in the Wadi Bou Sekrane, one of the most productive agricultural areas in Morocco, makes the city an important hub for agricultural products (grain, fruit and vegetables) and a regional center for trade and handicrafts. Meknes is one of the four royal cities of Morocco (Fez, Marrakech, Meknes and Rabat).

The city is divided into two parts: the older part houses the medina, the old city center, and lies to the west of the Oued Bou Sekrane-Valley. To the east is the younger part of town, the Ville nouvelle.
