Mersin, earlier İçel, is a city in the Mediterranean region (Turkey) of approx. 650,000 inhabitants.

This unofficial metropolis was officially opened in 2002 by İçel in Mersin renamed.
Around 1900 Mersin was a place with just 10,000 inhabitants. But the economic boom in Çukorova and the establishment of a free trade port led to a population explosion. Today Mersin is an extremely west-facing, pulsating city with a 52-storey high-rise as its landmark.
getting there
By plane
Direct flight from Frankfurt / Main and Düsseldorf to Adana (ADA). Otherwise via Istanbul or Ankara with Turkish Airlines.
Reachable from Germany by direct flight from Frankfurt in approx. 5 hours. Sun Express flies to Adana once a week (Tuesdays) and can be reached by direct flight from Düsseldorf in around 5 hours. Sun Express flies to Adana once a week (Fridays).
The tour continues with the Turkish airline "Jolly-Joker" minibuses for around € 10 per person, which run regularly between Adana Airport and Mersin from the car park in front of the departure hall. The end of the line is the "Forum" shopping center in Mersin and takes around 1.5 hours. A fixed stop is in Tarsus at the "Cleopatra Gate."

Bus station
A new long-distance bus station will be built around ten kilometers outside of the city in 2015. Minibuses to Silifke you can stop along the stops on the D 400 thoroughfare (2015: 12 TL).

The D400 road runs through the city.
By boat
- Ferry Mersin ↔ Latakia. Operations will be suspended until further notice due to the terrorist attacks on Syria and the NATO ship blockade.

Tourist Attractions
- Ataturk Parkı. Kilometers of promenade along the banks of the river in which, among other things, depictions of the entire Turkish history, a memorial for every Turkish first division football team or an original for all branches of service (e.g. a starfighter) There are also plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars and public open air fitness studios and tennis courts.
- center. In the busy shopping areas around the 46-story tower with the Classy hotel and bar on the top floor there is nothing that cannot be bought.
- Ulu Camii. A rather simple mosque between the shopping area and the riverside boulevard.
- Mersin Muğdat Camii. This largest mosque in Mersin on the bank boulevard was supposedly donated by religious communities on the Black Sea.
- Yumuktepe. Archaeological site with a museum. 8000 year old remains of settlements have been found here.
