Understand

The Mid-Atlantic as a cultural region is largely a mixture of the cultural regions that border it: the New England, the Midwest, the South and the Canadian provinces ofOntario and Quebec. As a result, states and especially cities have strong individual identities and locals are more likely to identify with a significant sub-region such as the New York City area, the Washington DC metropolitan area, rural Pennsylvania, the Downstate New Jersey, etc.

The population density is higher there. Three of the nation's top ten metropolitan areas are located here: New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., spaced from each other by just about an hour and a half away. These metropolitan areas are made up of immense urban sprawls that radiate out from the city centers and cover a significant fraction of the area of the region. Their huge populations ensure that the roads remain congested.

It is a true East Coast region, with all the stereotypes associated with the huge immigrant communities from all over the world, food, and a vaguely arrogant (and ignorant) attitude towards the rest of the country, especially towards the Middle states. The long Atlantic coast also means that the region has strong links, in terms of travel, culture and commerce, with Europe.

Areas outside of these mega-cities are much less visited by international tourists, but there is much more to see: Chesapeake Bay is a true global treasure and should not be missed by anyone interested in ecology, sailing or seafood. The beautiful and wild Adirondacks are the largest park in the continental United States; some of the most important Civil War battlegrounds like Gettysburg and Antietam are here. Niagara Falls is one of the great natural wonders of the world and the Appalachian Trail is a hiker's dream.

To go

By plane

The main points of entry are area airports and super hubs in the New York and Baltimore-Washington metro areas. The former is served primarily by John F. Kennedy International Airport (IATA : JFK), Newark Liberty International Airport (IATA : EWR) and LaGuardia Airport (IATA : LGA), while the second is served by Washington Dulles International Airport (IATA : IAD). Washington National Airport (IATA : DCA) and Baltimore Washington International Airport (IATA : BWI). Philadelphia is served primarily by a single airport, the Philadelphia International Airport (IATA : PHL), which is therefore the most important in the region. Other cities in the region will often have their own airports, but direct flights can be more difficult to find.

By train

Amtrak operates several routes in and out of this region, including the popular Acela express which goes from Boston to Washington via New York. Unlike other parts of the country, Amtrak is often the fastest and best way to get anywhere, due to the higher speeds along the Boston-Washington corridor and congestion on the roads and airports. Prices tend to reflect this, so shop around for what best fits your time and financial needs. Even travelers from Japan whose trains tend to be much more expensive than in Europe tend to be stunned by the high prices of the Acela and even the Northeast Regional - a slightly slower service with more stops - is more expensive than some European high speed trains.

On a boat

New York City is still served by a regular liner operated by Cunard Lines.

Circulate

To speak

As in most of the United States, all official Mid-Atlantic signs are in English and English speaking travelers should have no difficulty communicating their needs wherever they go. Spanish is widely spoken, primarily by immigrants from Latin America and their families, although the language is also poorly taught to the majority of the native-born population.

Because these five states are on the East Coast, they were the initial point of entry for most English-speaking immigrants and as such have retained more diversity in terms of regional accents than the rest of the country. country (accents tend to converge as settlers went west). While you are likely to encounter general pronunciation pretty much anywhere you go, you can find the New York accent in Brooklyn, Long Island, or northern New Jersey, the Inland North dialect from Buffalo to Syracuse and Binghamton. , "Bawlmorese" in Baltimore, the baffling "Picksburg" accent or southern accents on Maryland's east coast. You can even find English accents from the XVIIe century if you look for them among the isolated island communities of Chesapeake Bay!

To buy

Eat

If you know where to go, the Mid-Atlantic is a foodie's paradise. New York has the best upscale food scene in the world. The Washington D.C. area has an unlimited number of inexpensive, delicious, immigrant-run restaurants with cuisines from all over the world. Philadelphia is a great place to try American street food, including, of course, the Philly Cheeseteak. New Jersey dinners are iconic, and the coastal areas of Delaware and Maryland are rightly famous for their wonderful crab parties.

Have a drink / Go out

Few parts of the world can boast of nightlife in the urban areas of the Mid-Atlantic. New York's nightlife probably doesn't need to be introduced. From the finest wine bars to the best jazz in the world, New York really has it all in this category. Philadelphia, Allentown and Baltimore offer quirky, rougher and less accessible, but very lively bar and nightclub scenes. Pittsburgh defies post-industrial expectations with a vibrant and surprisingly chic nightlife scene. Washington at first glance appears to be the exception, with its reputation for bland and early shutdown. Early closing hours are disappointing on weekdays, but weekends have become hot for clubbers over the past 5-10 years.

Local drinks are plentiful, especially in the beer category. The most famous of all is the Yuengling (pronounced ying-ling) brand, America's oldest brewery. In most of Pennsylvania, ordering a lager will earn you a Yuengling lager.
