Modena is a city ofEmilia Romagna in Northern Italy. The city is the capital of the province of the same name, located between the provinces of Reggio Emilia and Bologna. The city is rich in high-level automotive industries (Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Panini ...) and also blessed with a renowned gastronomy with its balsamic vinegar, its raw ham, its formaggio reggiano, its Lambrusco ...

Understand

The first traces of life on the territory of Modena date from the Paleolithic, of which statuettes of the time have been found. The foundations of the city date back to around the 6th century BC, when the area was occupied by the Etruscans, who baptized the city "Mùtina". The city passed into the hands of various tribes, then under the power of the Roman Empire (183 BC), which placed great confidence in Mùtina. The city was then the scene of various wars for the power of the Empire Roman, after which the power of the city returned to the bishopric, led in particular by San Geminiano between 358 and 397, San Geminiano who would become Patron Saint of the city.

The city came close to destruction in the early 600s following heavy flooding. The populations had to take refuge in the neighboring commune of Cittanova. Power passed into the hands of the Lombards in 727, and knew the period of the Hungarian invasion. In 1135 official writings were found attesting to the freedom of the city. Later in 1452, the Duchy of Modena was born. The power of the duchy was obtained by the Dukes of Este, and lasting from 1598 when the Este family lost the siege of Ferrara. In 1796 the French troops arrived, led by Napoleon who imposed the Cisalpine Republic, power finally returned to the este family in 1815 with Francesco IV then Francesco V who capitulated in 1859. The Kingdom of Italy will take over.

The industry developed at the end of the 19th century and in particular in Modena the tobacco industry, the first railway lines connecting Modena to Sassuolo, Notantola, Finale Emilia, Vignola, Maranello, were also built at this time. Over the course of the 20th century, Modena gradually established itself as a hotspot for engines, with the establishment of the Fiat tractor factory in the 1930s and the birth of the Scuderia Ferrari.

During the Second World War, the city suffered bombardments and crimes from the Nazis, the city will be liberated on .
