background
The Moldova region goes back to the historical Principality of Moldova, the area of which is now divided into three countries: the eastern part corresponds to the historical Bessarabia and is now in Moldova. The northern part is the Bukovina, with only the southern Bukovina in Romania and the northern Bukovina in the Ukraine. The western part corresponds to today's Moldova region in Romania. The region is named after the river Vltava of the same name, which in the Gegeng Suceava rises and flows into the Sereth.
The Principality of Moldova was founded in the 14th century by princes from the region Maramureş founded to use another nation as protection against the Tartar incursions. The Fürstentu experienced its heyday under Stephen the Great (Romanian Ștefan cel Mare) in the years 1457 to 1503. He was able to assert the independence of Moldova against the ruling powers Poland, Hungary and the Ottoman Empire. In 1512 Moldova became a vassal state of the Ottoman Empire. From the 18th century a conflict with Russia and Austria began and in 1775 the Bukovina were ceded to Austria. In 1812 the eastern part was handed over to Russia.
